INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME

QUESTION OF THE DAY:
How did you spend your Labor Day holiday? Spent weekend with friends
and children, stayed in town, did nothing, spent time with friends
without their children, watched football, sold apple cider, went out for
a drive, rested, had fun with Mickey Mouse and family.
SECRETARY REPORT: Approved as submitted.
TREASURER REPORT: Approved as presented.
AWARD LUNCHEON REPORT:
Sarah McCord, Starr Manning, Melissa Buccur – Categories include the
following: Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Public Servant, Community
Impact – Business, Community Impact- Individual. Awards will include
luncheon at Mellott Family Center, cost $10.00 per person, December 15,
11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Special email to be sent in October with details.
LUMINARY REPORT: Barbara Baker – Will be sending out letters for sponsorship's and vendors for event.
TOWN REPORT:
Pete Olson – The signs are up on I-69 at exit 241 (332) and are very
nice; Splash pad is open and will remain open, weather permitting;
Council meeting on Monday, September 21, discussion to include 4 for the
4th, budget hearing, paving schedule. Clean up day scheduled for October 17; Yorktown Council for the Arts; and discussion on lake.
TIP OF THE MONTH:
Pete Olson – “Active Listening” – a way of listening that improves
understanding. Be a better active listener by focusing on the subject,
avoid distractions, be seated closely enough to hear, acknowledge
emotional state and respond.
PROGRAM:
Kelly Shrock and Marcey Minton – Community Foundation of Muncie &
Delaware County- The Community Foundation is celebrating its 30th
anniversary this year with offices located at Mulberry and Jackson
Streets in Muncie. Its current endowment is $55 million and has granted
$2.5 million back into the community. Currently it funds five
scholarships which include the Jim Leffler scholarship for runners and
cross country athletes, the Robin Lindsey scholarship, the Carolyn Lucas
scholarship, the Robert and Wanda McKibben scholarship, and the
Yorktown Lions scholarship.
The Town of Yorktown endowment
includes the following: 2009 – Yorktown Mt. Pleasant Community Library
Programming for adult patrons, LifeStream Services Pergola and furniture
at Pilgrim Place Apartments; 2010 – Yorktown – Mt. Pleasant Township
Community Library Young adult summer book program, Hillcroft Services,
trees for the environmental education program; 2011 – Yorktown Chamber
of Commerce, inaugural Four for the Fourth event, Town of Yorktown, Town
Manager, Disc golf course at Lion’s Club Park; 2012 – Yorktown Ban
Booster Association, Summer band program; 2013 –Town of Yorktown, Town
Manager, Community dog park project, Yorktown – Mt. Pleasant Township
Historical Alliance supplies to maintain collection; 2014 – Yorktown
Chamber of Commerce Luminary Committee, lights for Yorktown Luminary
festival, Yorktown Firefighters Association, Inc., Eagle Scout project
to update flag pole area; 2015 – Reach Yorktown Ministry, Inc. Grant
applications with instructions are available on line.
The
foundation is launching a program called 30 Days of Community, with a
video featuring Howard and Della Gregory and others who have contributed
to the betterment of Yorktown and surrounding communities. Video was
previewed at the meeting with Mrs. Della Gregory as a special guest.
NEW BUSINESS:
Discussed the possibility of offering business sponsorship's to cover
costs of monthly breakfasts. Motion was made and carried. Sponsorship's
will begin in January 2016, with Morrison Woods being sponsor for
January, Mark Goodpastor with Apex for February, 2016 and Cardinal
Capital Management for March, 2016. A sign-up sheet will be available
at the October Chamber meeting.
MISCELLANEOUS NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
“In Her Heels” event, vote for Steve Perry; Refrigeration units for
food pantry received; Harvest Dinner at Yorktown United Methodist
Church, October 9, 4-7 p. m.; WIBU Award Luncheon, October 21 – Athena
Awards; Crop Walk, 1:00 p.m., Sunday, September 27 – College Avenue
